Bewry wraps walkathon to raise funds for Wolmer’s Prep today
Captain Basil Bewry, the chairman of the board of the Kingston-based Wolmer's Preparatory School, will today wrap a 29-kilometre walkathon from the school to Newcastle to raise funds for the institution.
He will be joined by Health and Wellness Junior Minister Juliet Cuthbert-Flynn and members of the Wolmer's family.
Bewry has been inspired by British centenarian the now-deceased Captain Tom Moore, who raised millions of pounds for the health service by walking laps in his garden in last year's lockdown.
STEM financing
All funds raised today will go towards financing STEM – science, technology, engineering and maths – projects and assist students with special needs, with a target of $12 million.
Bewry thanked all who have contributed to the effort so far, including businessman Douglas Orane.
“Douglas Orane went to Wolmer's Prep School (WPS), and he shared with me that his success in life is due to the solid foundation established at WPS. He was so excited to hear of my fundraising walk, and as support for the children at WPS, he has agreed to match everyone else's donation dollar for dollar, up to a total of J$1 million, provided the funds were received by Wolmer's Trust by Thursday,” Bewry said.
Donations can be made to NCB Duke Street branch, Jamaican-dollar current account 061037527, US-dollar savings account 066421910, or at www. wolmers.org/donate.
Donors are being asked to send confirmation of donated amount to wpswalkathon@wolmers.org so the organisers can confirm receipt.
