Call for increase in personal allowance at Jamaica Customs

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I don’t exactly know how long the Jamaica Customs personal allowance of US$500 for travellers has been in existence, but it is high time that Jamaica call for a significant increase. The current allowance for accompanied and unaccompanied luggage, boxes or barrels, etc, is simply not suitable for the modest-travelling Jamaican of today. One item alone brought in from overseas can easily exceed the modest US$500. I urge the Government to strongly look into this matter ASAP so that Jamaicans can bring their goods and wares into Jamaica without the hassle of Customs applying excessive and unnecessary duties.
