Letter of the Day | Do not blame the kids

Published:Monday | March 2, 2020 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Madam:

With all the mayhem in schools and public spaces, the kids are the soft targets, so it is easy to blame them. This has nothing to do with condoning their disgusting behaviours but just to highlight that our innocence as adults is nothing to savour.

When, as a society, we allow irresponsible, popular females without a message of hope and substance to grow our females, what do you expect? When we allow some popular, irresponsible males to be role models who can only teach our kids about guns, drugs, violence, sex and scamming, what do you expect?

If those are the role models, don’t get confused when they show our kids how to roll all over the place and become public misfits. We have more negative influences, but those are some of the main culprits, whether you want to believe it or not.

In a society where we shoot others like bird, do you really expect them to be seen and never heard? Many of us are hypocritical influencers and facilitators, so why are you so concerned when you attract the perfect imitators?

Even if they are not learning in schools, they are A students as it relates to the informal curriculum of lawlessness, immorality and chaos; and society is doing a great job as the teacher.

Kids cannot groom themselves, and their actions are clear spin-offs of a deeper problem that catches most of our heads under sinking sand.

VICTIMS OF THE SYSTEM

If we were presenting them with overwhelming good, chances are they would know very little about bad. They are simply victims wreaking havoc on a system that created them but forgot to develop a solution manual for the inevitable problems. In their search to find a vaccine, they can only find band-aids to cover wounds that are not clean.

Problems get stronger if the solution search lasts longer and is underpinned by a nine-day wonder, so don’t expect change in the near future.

It’s a ‘mis/miss’ issue, so don’t treat them like a black roll of tissue. If they are left to be guided by a misguided society, some will go missing, they will make mistakes, they will be misunderstood, some will misinterpret the world and embrace misinformation and mistrust simply because of our missed opportunities to be the Mister, Miss and Mrs we should be.

One miss caused all a dis.
