Boot Leon Bailey from the national team

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am no racist, nor am I anti-black. I am as black as you can get; but sometimes as black persons, we allow our emotions to get the better of us.

Many of us are biased towards our race, and believe that people should pity us because of the colour of our skin, and because our ancestors were enslaved by the Europeans/whites years ago. In turn, when they are in positions of authority, have power or are talented, they believe they have the right to behave a certain way. They believe that persons should accept their dirty and abusive behaviour, and have no feelings at the end of the day.

The Leon Bailey situation is no different from the above about blacks who can’t hold their ‘meds’/humility. It’s my opinion that Leon Bailey’s success, in his thoughts, falls in the category of those minority black people who believe that because they are talented, rich and in certain positions, they are biger than everyone else and an entire country.

Leon’s behaviour towards the national football team shouldn’t be allowed, and he should be booted from the national team. Leon’s behaviour towards selection was motivated by the fact that he had an event to attend, and it was more important than putting on the black, green and gold. He will never be an Asafa Powell, Usain Bolt, Chris Gayle or Ricardo Gardner who represent their country with pride.

How can one person think that because he had a good season at Aston, he should treat the county of his birth with no regard? I am sure that come the next EPL season he will show up on time for Aston Villa, and that he will never plan a party before a preseason game. I think allowing him to wear the black, green and gold is a disrespect to the rest of his teammates, who sacrifice their time and their families to wear the national colours. He is no Messi, Christina Ronaldo, Pele, Zidane or Maradona, who believe that representing their country is more important than putting on a Real Madrid, Barcelona, Santos, or Napoli jersey.
