The nation needs nuclear families

THE EDITOR, Madam:

The topic of declining birth rates, and all the negative social and economic realities and implications thereof, both locally and globally, has been inundating social and mainstream media of late. This is a very challenging situation due to the personal, subjective and multifaceted nature of this critical issue.

One way the Government of Jamaica (GOJ) can begin to tackle and solve this issue is to formulate and place campaign ads in the print and electronic media.

These ads would be promoting the concept of the nuclear family and the unparalleled joy that having children within that nurturing environment brings.

They would outline how important children are to the present and future growth and development of those families and, by extension the society and the economy.

Also, from visual, inspirational and motivational standpoints, statues, billboards and murals should be commissioned by the GOJ for public spaces, throughout the length and breadth of Jamaica, showing the nuclear family eating together, playing together, praying together, and holding hands.

Last, the GOJ, in concert with the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica, should sponsor local plays and local and international television shows that depict family life in wholesome, positive, progressive and happy ways that could stimulate, inspire and motivate viewers to start families of their own.
