The most engrossing residential wonders dotting our landscape have been fashioned by humankind with exceptional talent and ingenuity.

No, that statement is not entirely correct. If the truth be told, many of these very dream homes have been blessed with the superior collaborative involvement of that phenomenon of the physical world known as nature. Because, make no mistake, it’s the incredible natural settings of some of these homes that propel their architecture to unfathomable depths of human fulfilment.

In the case of this address, the owners from Montreal, Canada, initially had eyes only for the surreal location (not the existing man-made structure on the property). A remote haven in a natural environment, on a steep coastal hillside, surveying Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth.

They purchased the existing house in 2015 and revamped it in 2016, with their souls encased in it. The couple had been visiting Jamaica over the years, and the time had come when short–term visits ceased to be enough! A place was required where they did not seem to be sticking their face in the freezer with the door shut every winter.

REFRESHING ATMOSPHERE

So here it is: the entrance cordially invites you with its intricate, Balinese wood ceiling over the walkway and betwixt parallel waterways, with individual fountain displays, refreshing the atmosphere.

The interiors arouse with double front doors opening and allowing an unobstructed line of sight straight to the sea. Wow!

The four air-conditioned/ceiling fan-cooled bedrooms are served by four bathrooms, some with outdoor showers and others indoors, incorporating roof skylights with views to the heavens above.

The extensive living and dining areas stun with towering 18-foot ceilings with chandeliers from a 17th-century palace. Walls of glass admit warmth of sunlight and seafront scenery — where dolphins are at play.

The kitchen (with breakfast area) exposes polished wooden cabinetry, sandwiched between stainless steel appliances.

The interior décor of earthy colours is a show of sparsity and simplicity, with accessories imported from Indonesia, Thailand and China. Of note, all floors are of textured concrete.

The outside terrace, shaded patio, gazebo and rooftop bar deck all collude to offer relaxation and entertainment, along with a swimming pool anchored to the house which you step right in from inside.

Architecture and nature have embraced, with the occupants of the home the better for it.
