JPS worker arrested

An employee of the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) has been arrested and charged, following a lengthy investigation into allegations of corrupt practices of meter tampering involving business customers.

The JPS in a statement said the arrest stems from a report to the light and power company, which conducted a thorough internal investigation before reporting the matter to the police.

The company explained that this is consistent with its zero tolerance of corruption within the JPS. The company said it has been investigating all reports of corruption made by the public. This resulted in the dismissal of four employees and two contractors last year, along with the arrest of four former contractors.

Meanwhile, in a press release, JPS President and Chief Executive Officer Kelly Tomblin urged the public to report cases of corruption to the police and urged employees to reject any and all offers to get involved in corrupt practices.

"While we are confident that the majority of employees are honest individuals doing the right thing, we must continue to take a stand against corruption, in every corner, internally and externally," she declared. "We are committed to making 2015 the year when we finally conquer the theft of service that undermines the energy future of Jamaica."
