A nine-year-old student and a policeman are now in hospital after they were both stabbed in the head during an incident in downtown Kingston a short while ago.

Their attacker - described as a man of unsound mind - managed to elude the police and is still on the run.

An eyewitness reports that the boy, a fourth-grader at Calabar Primary School, was chased by his attacker to the intersection of Duke and Sutton streets where he sought refuge from a female vendor.

However, according to the eyewitness, before the vendor could provide any assistance the man pounced and stabbed the nine-year-old in the head.

"They [the female vendor and another woman] were trying to shield him [the student] but him just use the knife and stab him," the eyewitness told The Gleaner.

The eyewitness said the man was quickly challenged by a plain clothes policeman, but used the knife to stab the policeman in the head.

The policeman reportedly fired several rounds at the man but he managed to escape.
