No fire at Riverton now - ODPEM
The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) says there is no evidence of fire at the Riverton disposal site in Kingston, although some sections are still smouldering.
Director-General of the ODPEM, Major Clive Davis, says up to noon today 90 per cent of the fire at the disposal site had been fully extinguished and covered with top soil.
He says smoke affecting communities near the dump will gradually reduce in the days ahead.
Up to this morning, communities close to the dump remained blanketed by smoke. The dump has been on fire for 11 days.
Local Government Minister Noel Arscott has said the residual smoke will not impede businesses, schools or any other activities in the area.
The authorities are still awaiting the results of an air quality assessment to determine the level of toxins in the air across the capital since the dump began burning.
