Noranda Bauxite's vice-president and general manager, Antoine Liddell, presented fishing equipment valued at more than $500,000 to the Alloa Fishermen's Co-operative in Discovery Bay on Thursday, June 11.

Liddell described the Noranda donation as "a contribution towards the enhancement and sustainability of the local fishing industry".

The equipment comprising netting, lines, rope, wires, and hooks was presented to Shawn Ascott, secretary of the co-op, at a function held at its headquarters at the Old Folly Beach in Discovery Bay.

Liddell told the fishermen that the contribution was part of the Noranda Community Council's micro-enterprise programme introduced in 2012 to stimulate economic and business development in the bauxite company's operating area communities around Discovery Bay.

He also said that over the years, the fishing and bauxite shipping industries had demonstrated that they both complement each other as both are vital to the economic development of the community and the country.

In accepting the donation, Ascott thanked Noranda for its interest and support of the co-operative. He said that the equipment would be used to improve fishing activities and productivity in the area.
