Noranda Awards 65 Students
Noranda Jamaica Bauxite Partners has awarded 65 bursaries worth $1.5 million to the 65 top GSAT students, boy and girl, from 32 primary schools within the company's operating area.
The annual awards were presented on Thursday, August 20, at the Port Rhoades Sports Club in Discovery Bay, St Ann. The awards of merit are a part of a major investment in education provided each year, which includes summer holiday jobs for 100 students, and 80 first-year tertiary-institution bursaries for students from the community.
Guest speaker at last Thursday's function was Dr Patrice Charles-Freeman, executive director of the National Parenting Commission.
Noranda is involved in a wide-ranging educational assistance programme, including sponsorship of cultural, sports and agricultural competitions, providing water for schools, employee participation in a student mentorship programme, and academic performance incentives.
