Funding sought for project that further curtails electricity theft

Junior Energy Minister Julian Robinson says funding is now being sought to aid the expansion of a project that seeks to regularise electricity supply to residents in 10 communities where electricity theft is widespread.

The announcement comes after residents in seven communities across Robinson’s South East Andrew constituency benefited under the project. The move to regularise electricity supply in communities with high incidents of electricity theft is being done through a pilot project run by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) in collaboration with the Jamaica Social Investment Fund.

Speaking in the State of the Constituency Debate in Parliament last Wednesday, Robinson says the plan is to expand the project nationally, noting that over 180,000 persons are using electricity illegally.
