Road fatalities continue to rise

The number of persons killed on the nation’s roadways this year has reached 300, with two months still remaining.

The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) says the 300 deaths, which resulted from 279 fatal crashes, is 26 more than the number recorded for the corresponding period last year and 56 more than the number recorded for the similar period in 2013.

Three hundred and thirty one persons died in motor vehicles crashes last year.

According to statistics provided by the NRSC, motorcyclists led all groups of road users with 89 deaths so far this year.

This represents an increase of close to 100 per cent when compared with the 46 motorcyclists killed over the corresponding period last year.

Pedestrians were next with 72 deaths, followed by private motor vehicle drivers with 49 and private motor vehicle passengers with 41.
