Two opposition Senators turn up for CCJ debate

The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) debate has resumed in the Senate.

However, Tom Tavares-Finson and Kavahn Gayle were the only two opposition Senators present for the debate.

It was expected that Government Senators would take action to resume the debate on the bills to establish the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) as Jamaica’s final court if opposition members continued their boycott of the Senate.

Last week the opposition Senators stayed away from Thursday and Friday’s sitting of the Upper House.

Opposition and government senators have been at odds since the suspension of Marlene Malahoo Forte two Fridays ago, after she failed to produce a copy of a letter from which she read during her contribution to the CCJ debate.

Last Thursday, the suspension of the opposition Senator was lifted but her colleagues stayed away from the chamber demanding an apology from the Senate President Floyd Morris.

Last week leader of government business in the Senate, A.J. Nicholson, warned that measures will be taken to continue the CCJ debate if opposition members stayed away today.
