Jamaica's foreign minister, A.J. Nicholson, has been bestowed with one of Brazil most prestigious honours.

Nicholson was last Thursday honoured with the National Order of the Southern Cross of Brazil in recognition of his contribution to the deepening of relationships between both countries since 2013.

Informing the Senate of the development last Friday, Senator Navel Clarke said Nicholson was most deserving of the award.

"There is this metaphor that a king has no honour in his own country. That could very well be said of a minister of government considering the cut and thrust of the political and parliamentary system that we are exposed to," Clarke said.

He said that Nicholson, who is the leader of Government Business in the Senate, is held in high esteem by the international community.

Opposition Senator Robert Montague said, too, that the honour was well deserved, adding that "when a Jamaica does well and is embraced, we are all proud".

Nicholson said that the honour was not for himself but for all Jamaicans.
