He recognised Japan as a true friend of the people of Jamaica and called on Jamaicans to keep the people of Japan in their prayers in this time of distress. He further expressed to Japanese nationals living in Jamaica, including the Japanese ambassador, sincere hope that their families at home are safe and advised that the Jamaican mission in Japan is checking that Jamaicans who live there are safe.

The prime minister noted that while natural disasters do happen, he is deeply saddened by the devastating impact on families and the economies in both countries.
