DPP: KD Knight lucky to escape contempt of court charge

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn says attorney K.D Knight was lucky to escape being sanctioned by a high court judge for his behaviour during a hearing of the Trafigura corruption case this week. 

KD Knight represents People's National Party (PNP) president Portia Simpson Miller and four other party officials who were subpoenaed to appear before Justice Lennox Campbell on Monday. 

Knight and the judge engaged in several testy exchanges one of which involved the Queen's Counsel admitting that he was being hostile to the judge and refusing to follow certain directives.

Speaking to Cliff Hughes on his talk-show on Power 106FM Thursday afternoon, the DPP condemned Knight for his behaviour, saying the judge could have cited Knight for contempt of court. 

According to her, a junior lawyer who behaved in a similar manner would likely have been punished. 

 Earlier Knight used previous cases involving the DPP to question her credibility in criticising him. 

The long-running Trafigura case has been put on hold until the Court of Appeal hears an appeal by the PNP officials of a decision by Justice Campbell ordering them to give evidence in open court. 

Dutch authorities want to question the PNP officials about 31 million dollars given to the party by the Dutch company Trafigura Beheer in 2006.
