PSOJ anticipates positive outcome from talks between Jamaica, T&T leaders

At least one major Jamaican business group is expecting a positive outcome from talks between the Jamaican and Trinidadian leaders to resolve the ongoing trade and immigration row between both islands.

President of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ), William Mahfood, says the importance of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago to CARICOM demands that both countries resolve their differences for the benefit of the region.

Mahfood says Trinidadian Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has indicated that he is a true regionalist and, therefore, if he is serious about addressing the ongoing trade and immigration issues, then the outcome will be good. He says CARICOM states must appreciate that the region is stronger as a united force.

Rowley arrived in Jamaica at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston just before mid-day today on a four-day official visit.

During his visit, the T&T prime minister will discuss with his Jamaican counterpart, Prime Minister Andrew Holness, the signing of a Framework Agreement and the establishment of a Joint Commission, which is currently under negotiation. The framework is to provide a structured medium for bilateral discussions and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Rowley will also address the 22nd Session of the General Assembly of the International Seabed Authority, under way at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston.

Rowley is scheduled to engage with heads of private sector bodies and entities on trade and business development during his four-day visit to Jamaica.
