NWA to demolish signs along Mandela Highway

The National Works Agency (NWA) is preparing to demolish a number of billboards along the Mandela Highway to facilitate the widening of the roadway which links St Andrew to Kingston.

The signs to be demolished are located between Six Miles in St Andrew and the Highway 2000 East-West ramp in St Catherine.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, says nearly 70 billboards are posted within the construction zone.

He says in March, advertising companies, the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation and the St. Catherine Parish Council were all notified of the road works and were advised to remove their signs.

But Shaw says none of the signs has been removed and even more billboards have been erected on the section of the Mandela Highway that is to be improved.

He says these signs will be demolished because they will hamper the widening of the road, which is slated to begin this weekend.

However, the NWA says advertising signs about speeding and the Toll Road will be removed and stored during the clearing process.

In the meantime, the NWA says it will try to minimise the effect the road works will have on motorists. 

The agency says a detailed traffic management plan has been drafted and will be implemented over the next 24 months.
