Strength of women - Bog Walk lauds stalwarts

BOG WALK, St Catherine:
Five women, two in absentia, were honoured by the True United Sisters and Power of Faith Ministries in Bog Walk, St Catherine, for their outstanding contributions to education and religion over the last 45 years.
The honourees were lauded as stalwarts in their communities in a ceremony celebrating International Women's Day on March 8, in which their devotion and commitment to the upliftment of young lives were highlighted.
Guest speaker at the function, retired educator Sonia Stewart, implored members of the audience to move forward, find a purpose, and fulfil their purpose.
"There are four qualities that you should possess in achieving your goals: embrace your individuality and be happy, use your voice, find your dream in life and pursue it, live up to your moral values, and consider yourself a woman of influence," she said, adding that a woman of substance is a woman of power.
DEFYING CONVENTIONAL THINKING
Industrial arts specialist Roneith Cohen, attached to the Bog Walk High School, was said to have defied the conventional thinking that certain job descriptions are best suited for men. She taught plumbing and welding, among other vocations, to students over the last 25 years.
Beulah Reynolds, senior teacher at the Lucky Valley Primary, and Missionary Jean Morgan of the Power of Faith Ministries, who were also present to receive their awards were celebrated for 42 and 35 years in the fields of education and religion, respectively.
Janeta Paharsingn of the Jericho Primary School and Deaconess Dorret King of the Power of Faith Ministries in their absence, were awarded for their services in education and religion.
The awards ceremony was preceded by a health fair.
