Norman Manley airport incident was a simulation exercise - authorities
Activities at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) are reportedly back to normal after the explosion of a bag inside the terminal building last evening.
Alfred McDonald, senior director of Commercial Development and Planning at the Airports Authority of Jamaica said the explosion was part of an emergency test.
“As part of an exercise to test the emergency response mechanism of the airport, the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority authorised an incident that would take place in the airport terminal,” said McDonald this morning.
“It was executed without the knowledge of a number of the emergency responders so that the response system could be assessed.”
No one was injured in the incident and flights were not affected.
McDonald said that all aspects of the exercise are being evaluated.
