The altar at the Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church after suspected arsonists set fire to the building early this morning.

Fire fighting personnel were called to the Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St Andrew early this morning after sections of the property caught fire in an incident the police believe was caused by arsonists.

“It occurred around 1:40 am. The priest was awakened by security personnel and was made aware that the altar drapery, and another section of the church, was on fire," a representative of the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Corporate Communications Unit told The Gleaner.

The Half-Way Tree fire station conducted cooling down exercises.

No one was hurt, and no suspects determined, however, investigations into the matter are ongoing.

The Church this afternoon issued a statement in which it stated that the fire started between 1:00 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. and that several sections of the church have been badly damaged and furniture and appliances destroyed.
