Petrojam oils students’ learning

More than 200 students benefited from Petrojam's annual 12-week Summer Employment Programme, which ended recently.

The programme, which started on June 5, provided secondary- and tertiary-level students, ages 16 to 25 years, the opportunity to gain work experience in a number of disciplines, including engineering, safety, logistics, marketing, accounting, legal services, and human resources.

According to Petrojam's manager of human resource development and administration, Yolande Ramharrack, the company's contribution to continuous learning for 24 of its 35 years has been significant.

"This is a demonstration of the company's commitment to ensure the sustainability of a well-trained, skilled workforce nationally, through exposure to various areas of work at the Petrojam Refinery," said Ramharrack.

The participants were deployed to departments across the refinery relevant to their fields of study, while others were placed at off-site locations, including the Supreme Court, Women's Centre, Diabetes Association of Jamaica, the National Land Agency, among others, with Petrojam providing remuneration.

Some students were assigned specific projects during their stint, at the end of which they did a formal presentation of their findings and recommendations.
