March 7 set for selection of Kingston mayor and deputy
The Electoral Commission of Jamaica is advising that a meeting of the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation is to be held on Thursday, March 7 at noon for the selection of Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
Both the Jamaica Labour Party and the People's National Party won 20 divisions each in Monday's local government elections.
Under these circumstances, the party that received the majority of votes will determine who will be the corporation's chairman and Mayor of Kingston.
The PNP won the most votes so its members will decide who becomes mayor.
The JLP will thereafter select the deputy mayor.
The principal returning officer, by law, will officiate the selection process and cast the deciding vote if there is a tie.
Meanwhile, the commission has moved to clarify the results of the local government poll.
On Thursday, it informed that JLP candidates won the majority of divisions in seven parishes, while candidates for the PNP won in five parishes.
It further said that PNP won the majority of the divisions in the Municipality of Portmore as well as the position of Mayor.
Today, it has moved away from referencing parishes to local authorities.
As such, it noted that JLP won seven of the local authorities, winning Monday's local government election, and that the PNP won six of the local authorities, inclusive of the Portmore Municipality.
