The Jamaica Entertainment and Creative Industries Practitioners Insurance Plan is to be launched within weeks.

Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, made the disclosure during her contribution to the 2024/25 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on Tuesday.

“This game-changing plan will address situations where there is no money to bury a practitioner upon his/her passing or where some entertainers become ill and are unable to fund the necessary medical treatment out of pocket,” Grange said.

“I know the need for this insurance plan, and many practitioners and their families often turn to me, as Minister, for assistance. I try my best. But this insurance plan will provide a better, more sustainable, more dignified option,” she added.

The Minister informed that following a competitive tender process, the contract was awarded to Guardian Life Insurance Company and will be signed in a matter of weeks.

“It is our expectation that through this deliberate action, artistes and creative practitioners will take advantage of this scheme and so reduce their vulnerability to adversity and death, as has been the current experience,” Grange said.

The Jamaica Entertainment and Creative Industries Practitioners Insurance Plan will be similar to the very successful Jamaica Athlete Insurance Plan, which provides Group Health, Group Life and Group Personal Accident coverage to nearly 2,000 athletes from 35 National Sports Federations.
