Prime Minister Andrew Holness says 257 light poles went down in St Elizabeth, the parish most significantly impacted by the passage of Hurricane Beryl.

Holness, who was speaking in Parliament Tuesday afternoon, said, additionally, 225 insulators and cross-arms were damaged along with 105 conductors and 13 transformers.

He said restoration work is underway in the parish but given the extent of the damage it will require weeks to complete.

“I want to assure all Jamaicans that the Government is monitoring the progress and we will do everything possible to accelerate the timeline for restoration,” he said, adding that some Jamaica Public Service (JPS) customers in the parish were put back on the grid earlier today.

He said service was also restored to Black River Hospital.

Earlier Tuesday, JPS announced that over the next few weeks, about 300 workers – a combination of JPS employees and contractors –  will be deployed throughout the parish to do restoration work.

The entire parish was left without power following devastation by Hurricane Beryl last Wednesday.
