Man accused of tricking motorist out of $50,000 for return of his car charged with fraud
A 26-year-old man accused of lying to a motorist that his car was seized by the police and taking $50,000 from him to get the vehicle released has been charged with fraudulent conversion.
Labourer Corey Barnaby was charged on Wednesday after being positively identified during an identification parade.
A court date for him is being finalised.
Reports from the Denham Town police are that about 9:00 p.m., on Sunday, June 23, Barnaby informed a man that his motor car was seized by the police and that $50,000 was needed for its release.
The police say the man gave Barnaby the sum, after which he went to the Denham Town Police Station and drove the car from the compound.
It was later borne out that the vehicle was never seized and that Barnaby had only pretended to pay the police for the vehicle, which was already in his possession.
A report was made to the police, and he was taken into custody, where he was charged on Wednesday, July 17.
