Marcia Robinson, acting dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Technology, presents Jason Baker with the 2021-22 Student of the Year award during the Annual Academic Awards Ceremony, held recently inside Lecture Theatre 50 at the UTech Papine campus in St Andrew, for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic period.

The Faculty of Law at the University of Technology (UTech) recently held its awards ceremony, bringing together students, faculty and guests to celebrate the exceptional academic achievements and contributions to the faculty.

Among the highlights of the event was the recognition of students of the year for 2021-22 and 2022-23, Jason Baker and Natalie McKenzie, respectively.

Baker, who received awards for being the top student in seven modules and was the valedictorian for the 2023 graduating class, was the first in his family to attend university, though not without challenges.

“Through hard work and determination, your goals in life can be achieved,” is the mantra of the 2021-22 Student of the Year, who experienced significant financial challenges and had to adapt to the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. He is currently continuing his studies to complete the Legal Education Certificate at the Norman Manley Law School to become fully qualified to be admitted to practise as an attorney-at-law in Jamaica.

McKenzie’s performance was equally impressive, as she copped six subject awards.

She overcame sickness, the death of a loved one, and the vicissitudes of life to also graduate with the highest grade point average from the Faculty of Law. She credits God for the miracles she experienced during her academic journey and believes in never giving up on your dreams.

“Sometimes life takes you on a path you never anticipated, but all things work together for our good,” she said.

Earlier, the ceremony commenced with a welcome from Marcia Robinson, acting dean, and opening remarks from Dr Kevin Brown, president of UTech. They highlighted the significance of recognising academic excellence, the hard work of the students, and emphasised the institution’s commitment to fostering a culture of learning, innovation and community service.

Following the opening remarks, keynote speaker Tanya Smith Anderson, an alumna of the faculty, attorney-at-law and chief people officer at the RJRGLEANER Communications Group, spoke about embracing innovation, technology and integrity.

Smith Anderson’s words resonated with the audience and provided sound guidance for the future lawyers.

The awards presentation began with the recognition of persons who made the dean’s list. These were students who demonstrated exemplary academic performance. Students who attained the highest grade in a module and those who made significant contribution to the faculty were also recognised.

The recognitions served as an inspiration to others to pursue their academic goals with renewed vigour, while serving others.
