Spanish Town Hospital’s ultrasound department gets new ac unit
In a gesture embodying the spirit of community care, a local IT company, Modern Power and Cooling Technology (MPCT) recently donated a much-needed air conditioning unit to the ultrasound department at the Spanish Town Hospital in St Catherine.
“The donation of the air conditioning unit will ensure that both staff and patients can operate and receive valuable patient care in a more comfortable environment,” expressed Wayne Cunningham, CEO of MPCT in a media release.
The hospital’s ultrasound department had reported significant challenges in patient care, due to extreme heat that affected both patients and staff. The environment drastically hindered the department’s ability to maximise its patient-serving capacity. The unit caters to about 250 patients each month, but this figure has been significantly impacted by the current circumstances.
Veta McDermott, acting CEO of Spanish Town Hospital, said that the donation will have a positive impact on the number of patients that the unit can serve.
“We are incredibly grateful for the generous donation of this air conditioning unit for our ultrasound room. Not only will it create a more comfortable environment for our patients and staff, but it will also help ensure the optimal functioning of our equipment. This enhancement will greatly aid our commitment to providing the highest quality care, and it will also allow us to focus on what truly matters – the health and well-being of our patients. Again, thank you to Modern Power,” McDermott said.
Reflecting on his relationship with the institution, Cunningham shared:
“My dad who will be 88 years old this December worked at the Spanish Town Hospital as a porter/male orderly. As a child, I spent many days at the said hospital simply accompanying my dad and receiving care when I was sick as a child. Being born and raised in Spanish Town, it is important now that I can give back. This gives me great joy and personal satisfaction,” Cunningham said.
Andrea Thomas, sales and marketing manager at MPCT shared that during routine servicing operations at the hospital, the necessity of an air conditioning unit was identified. This discovery prompted the company to mobilise plans for the procurement and installation of the unit.
“We currently handle services in different capacities for the Spanish Town Hospital and during this process, we recognised that there was an issue with the air conditioning unit in the ultrasound room. As you can imagine, this situation had far-reaching effects on the optimal operation of the room. We know all too well how important it is for the hospital to have a properly functioning ultrasound room as the need for a patient to have an ultrasound done immediately can save lives. With this in mind, it was an easy decision for us to support the hospital in this way by providing a replacement unit for that area,” Thomas explains.
MPCT has established itself as one of the leading providers of IT systems and services in Jamaica. The company offers a wide range of products and solutions, including uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, power conditioning equipment, monitoring services, cooling systems among other related offerings, the release noted.
