Cameron determined to deliver double gold and title for Edwin Allen at Champs

It was all eyes on the light blue of defending champions Edwin Allen, as Class One 200-metre star Saqukine Cameron sizzled to a season-best 23.59 seconds in the girls' 200-metre preliminaries on day two of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls' Athletic Championships at the National Stadium yesterday.

"That's a fast time," was the defending champions' reaction when she was approached by The Gleaner for an interview, following her run.

is 23.18, which seems under threat now.

"I want to be the first person in my school to go under 23 seconds," she underlined, noting that every race onward is "a tough one, but I am not fearing anyone".

"I am not preeing (looking for) any record, I just want to do my best and help Edwin to win two titles in a row," she continued.

Bouts of injuries and technical glitches over the years robbed them of back-to back titles, but Cameron notes she will be leading from front this year.

"My approach was just to go out there confident and come out with the victory. Everybody is looking up to me to do well, so I have to go out there and stay focused. This is my last year at Edwin Allen; I want the title," she stressed.

On being favourite to win, Cameron is keen to deliver.

"I don't want to disappoint my coach and my school. I just want to do my best and make everybody proud," she outlined.

The 18-year-old has four events to contest that could help Edwin Allen in taking the title back to Frankfield.

Last year, Cameron was second in the 200-metre final, and is even more determined to win gold this year.

She was also a member of her school's 4x100m and 4x400m gold medal teams last year.
