Innswood take command of Grace Shield final
A stroke-filled century from West Indies Under-19 batsman Jeavor Royal has put Innswood High in pole position against Excelsior High heading into Thursday's third and final day of their urban area ISSA-Grace Shield cricket final at Melbourne Oval.
Royal, who represented the regional side at the ICC Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, struck 104 as Innswood, batting a second time, ended the second day on 336 for nine.
This is for a commanding overall lead of 366 runs after the Spanish Town-based institution had scored 223 in their first innings.
Excelsior, who resumed on 179 for six were bowled out for 193 in their first innings after losing their last four wickets for 14 runs inside the first eight overs of the day.
Captain Royal, who is competing in his final year of the competition, hit 12 fours and four sixes during his innings, which came off 97 balls.
He was supported by wicketkeeper Oshane Levy, 83, and Jamaica Under-19 batsman, Carlos Brown, who got 54.
Spinner Rohan Beadle, two for 53, and Davil Wallistan, two for 61, were the leading bowlers for Excelsior.
"After claiming first innings, the plan was to drive home the advantage, and I am happy I was able to play my part," said Royal.
"The team was 116 for four when I went out there, and needed a senior player to stand up. We just need to hit the final stay focused, and try to get the job done," he added.
Kirkland Bailey, coach of Excelsior, in looking forward to the third day, is aware they have a difficult task.
"It looks an uphill task from here, but not an impossible one," he said.
"We have several players in our team who have scored centuries so far this season, including our two Jamaica Under-19 batsman, Kirk McKenzie and captain Raewin Senior.
"It is therefore for us to show the requisite application."
Play is slated to resume at 10 a.m.
