New faces in Reggae Girlz camp

The Jamaica Football Federation has invited 12 new players to its first senior women's team training camp ahead of this summer's FIFA Women's World Cup in France. The camp will take place in St Ann from January 16 to 21. Head coach Hue Menzies said he is giving everyone a chance to show their quality and impress the coaching staff.

"We have some new players coming in, but we just wanna see them challenge the others and see the combinations they have with the other players," he said. "But it depends on how they perform, as we will be looking to bring in another crop of players, especially for the next camp, where we will narrow down the list," he said. "We want to ensure that we bring the 23 best players to France."

Menzies says selecting the best players is his priority, but, after this initial camp, they intend to step up preparation at the next camp, as he will have a clearer idea of who will be in the team by then.

"This is preparation for the World Cup, so we start looking at players, and this will give us an opportunity that when we reach the World Cup, we are prepared. The next camp, we'll have a game, so we'll get an opportunity to see where they are and the type of players they are.

"So the next camp, we'll see how the girls perform, and we'll know if we have to bring more players in or stick to that core. There are a couple players that are injured coming to this camp, and they will get an opportunity in order for them to make the next camp," he said.

Menzies also wants the public to get to know the players and boost the team's confidence ahead of the World Cup.

"We expect a competitive camp," he said. "The camp will be good, and we want Jamaica to know the players. There are a lot of players they don't know, and this is an opportunity to get to know these players and welcome them to the team," he added.
