UWI, GC Foster hunt Intercol netball crown
THE 2019 Intercol netball season will come to a climax today at the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport with the playing of the Senior finals with The University of West Indies (UWI) ‘A’ and G.C. Foster College ‘A’ facing off at 3 p.m.
This is the first time that both teams will face each other in the final as the dominant team – The Mico University College – who had contested the final over the past nine years, was eliminated by G.C. Foster College earlier this week.
Despite getting by Mico and playing at home, G.C. Foster College will start as underdogs given UWI’s unblemished season so far, with Shamera Sterling and her teammates expected to lift their second title in five years.
UWI ‘A’ have been in ominous form all season, beating their rivals by big margins, including today’s opponents, who they easily defeated in the preliminary round of the competition.
They were not tested in their midweek semi-final against the University of Technology as their opponent forfeited the game after the half-time break after they could not find enough players, following injuries to most of their starters with not enough reserves available to replace them.
At the break, UWI had a big 40-7 lead.
Sterling, one of the best defenders in the world, will be joined in the backline by the outstanding Latanya Wilson, formerly of Gaynstead High, along with another former Gaynstead student, goal shooter Amanda PIckney, who are all expected to play key roles in their title bid.
G.C. Foster College will be hoping to go all the way and will be counting on home-court advantage in their hunt for a first win against UWI ‘A’ this season.
They will be looking to their shooting duo of Safon Knight and Kestina Sturridge, the former National Under-21 player, for inspiration.
