Shortwood take Intercol female football title

Following a historic win a year ago, Shortwood Teachers’ College’s female football team secured successive Intercol Women’s Football titles last Saturday, after getting the better of many-time champions, G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 regulation time draw in the final.

The match was played at the Jamaica Football Federation/Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence, UWI.

After getting by their opponents earlier in the season, the G.C. Foster College team arrived in the final with full confidence of registering a repeat result, However, it was the Shortwood team that showed more purposeful at the start of the game, with former St Jago High School player Crystal Walters putting G.C. Foster College under constant pressure despite failing to capitalise on the number of easy chances that fell her way early on.

Shortwood paid the price for their wastefulness in the 27th minute when G.C. Foster College took the lead through St Kitts and Nevis international, Keisha Powell, who found the back of the net with a curler from some 25 yards out.

However, with three minutes to go before the half-time break, Shortwood drew level, as Walters made up for her early misses by scoring.

Both teams tried desperately without success to score the winner in the second half as the game ended 1-1 at full time, forcing a penalty shoot-out, with Shortwood coming out winners in the end.

Meanwhile, Northern Caribbean University (NCU) won the Men’s Intercol Division II title, as the Mandeville-based institution edged Moneague College 1-0 on Sunday at the Montego Bay Community College playing field through a 85th-minute goal from Adrian Tomlinson.

Division I promotion

Both teams have gained promotion to the Division I competition next year.

New champions will be crowned in the Men’s Division I competition this season following the playing of the semi-final between defending champions, The University of West Indies (UWI) and G.C. Foster College last Saturday at the UWI Mona Bowl.

G.C. Foster College got by their opponents 4-2 on penalty kicks after both teams had played out a goalless draw at full time.

UWI were seeking to make it two finals this season after defeating The Mico University College 1-0 a week earlier in the Greg Garrell knockout competition to retain their title.

G.C. Foster College will play either Trench Town Polytechnic or Caribbean Maritime University in the final. Their semi-final game was not played due to a water-logged Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex due to heavy showers earlier in the day.
