WOW WOW takes SVL Two-Year-old Stakes

GARY Subratie’s WOW WOW did just enough, a workman-like victory, with no-frills journeyman rider Panamanian Ameth Robles to take control of the Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes three furlongs out, running away from rivals in the straight to win by two lengths.

A topped-up, money-back favourite, WOW WOW’s only possible threat at a mile, FEARLESS CHAMPION, who had closed into second place behind him at seven furlongs in last month’s Pick-3 Super Challenge Trophy, was declared an early non-runner, paving the way for an eighth straight victory by Subratie’s runner, who became the second horse to sweep the SVL Two-Year-Old Series.

$1million bonus

Unlike 2013 Horse of The Year PRINCESS POPSTAR, WOW WOW came under the auctioneer’s hammer at the annual Yearling Sale, earning a $1 million bonus for the sweep, pushing owner Michros’ earnings from the event in excess of $3.3 million, boosted by the $2.1 million winner’s purse and NIPSTER’s fourth-place finish for the winning owner.

Michros, whose principal is Michael Bernard, started the afternoon trailing leading owner Carlton Watson by approximately $1.1 million, WOW WOW’s victory handing the outfit its first title a day in advance of tomorrow’s closing meet.

WOW WOW clocked 1:38.0 for a mile, after splits of 23.4 for the opening quarter, 46.3 to the half-mile, and 1:10.2 at the top of the lane.

Subratie crowned his first Two-Year-Old Stakes victory by completing a two-timer, landing the eighth event with three-year-old classics and Superstakes-placed SENTIENT, who made amends for his loss at a mile, 12 days prior, attacking rivals four-wide entering the straight and disposing of DUKE a furlong and a half out.

SENTIENT, champion-jockey designate, apprentice Christopher Mamdeen’s second winner on the nine-race card, pushed his tally to 95 wins, 15 clear of Omar Walker.

Mamdeen had earlier won aboard 5-1 shot, NUCLEAR THUNDER, in the fifth event.

Another apprentice, Raddesh Roman, as well as outgoing champion jockey, Anthony Thomas, also rode two winners.

Thomas opened the programme with 6-5 favourite MONEY CALL who benefitted from the favourite, SHESAYSYES, breaking down in the stretch run. He returned to made all with DALLAS, at odds of 7-1 in the fifth.

Roman struck at the back end of the card, booting home 5-1 chance GENERAL REPORT in the seventh, and SWEET SURPRISE, at odds of 2-1, in the ninth.
