Gordon, Mondon win SIGMA Run

Garfield Gordon of UCT Steppas and defending champion Elizabeth Mondon of Spartan Health Club walked away with top honours after being the first man and woman to cross the finish line in the 5K road race section of the Sagicor SIGMA Corporate Run in New Kingston yesterday. Gordon was timed in 16:57.00 minutes, while Mondon clocked 22:44.00.

Gordon, who was winning his first Sagicor Sigma Run, had to pull out all the stops to deny Joshua Hunte of Barbados, who clocked a personal-best 17:17.00 minutes for second.

“I felt good today (Sunday), compared to three weeks ago at the Run For Your Heart event, when I was ill,” he said. “But it was not that easy, as the runner from Barbados, whom I knew nothing about, gave me a scare in the early stage of the event. I managed to prevail in the end and I am pleased with the time, knowing that I am not able to train on a regular basis because of road commitment.”

Dwayne Graham ended third in 17:40.00 minutes.

Mondon finished the women’s 5k ahead of Arieta Martin, who took second in 23:09.00 minutes, and Jozanne Harris, who clocked 22:45.00 seconds. Mondon, from Paris, France, was delighted with another success at the event.

“This is my fifth time participating at the Sigma Run and it does not get easier each year,” she said. “My time this year was a bit slower, but I am happy with the win, and it is a great event and it was good to run for this special cause, and I will be back next year to defend my title.”

The race started at Emancipation Park on Knutsford Boulevard and went along Trafalgar Road, Waterloo Road, West King’s House Road, and Constant Spring Road before ending at Oxford Road, back at the park. The objective for this year’s event was to raise $52 million for the Savanna-La-Mar Public General Hospital, Bustamante Hospital for Children and the Clifton Boys’ Home.

The run also had a record turnout of 26,014 participants.
