Portmore United to the rescue
NATIONAL GOALKEEPER Akeem Chambers of Waterhouse FC and his brother Tafari, a Harbour View FC player, are breathing a little easier today after collecting cheques for $175,000 from Portmore United yesterday.
Last weekend, the brothers lost their house which was completely burnt out after a massive fire. They also lost all their belongings and help has been coming from the Waterhouse community and the local football fraternity.
Both collected cheques yesterday from Portmore players Emelio Russell, Chavari Willis and Romaine Breakenridge who made the presentation on behalf of their team. Communication director of Portmore Football team, Superintendent Steve Brown, said the players were very unfortunate.
“Despite the fierce rivalry of the players on the field of play, they are a loving family off the field,” Brown said. “All the players of Portmore, along with the officials, decided to assist and we exceeded our target.” Brown appealed to the other clubs and others outside of football to assist both players.
GRATEFUL
Akeem, a student of The Mico University College where he is pursuing a degree in physical education, thanked Portmore for their kind contribution.
“I am really overwhelmed by the kind gesture from rival club Portmore,” he said. “This means a lot to us and although this has affected us physically we are both mentally strong and we are confident of rising from this unfortunate situation.”
Coach of the Waterhouse team, Marcel Gayle, also thanked Portmore for their quick and kind response.
“I am confident that both players will bounce back from their unfortunate situation. Better days are ahead and this will only draw us closer as a team,” he said.
