Den Street secures sweep for DaCosta

DEN STREET chased down the pair of fillies, HOIST THE MAST and SHE’S A WONDER, to win yesterday’s six-furlong Cash Pot Trophy for two-year-olds, handing 18-time champion trainer Wayne DaCosta a sweep of the weekend’s feature races.
DaCosta, who won Saturday’s Jamaica Derby with KING ARTHUR, closed the late double with BIG MAMA to overtake champion Anthony Nunes atop the trainers’ standings, racing to an approximate $350,000 lead against his perennial rival, who had started the weekend with a $5.4 million advantage.
DEN STREET, partnered by leading rider, Anthony Thomas, caught the battling pair of Nunes’ HOIST THE MAST and Ian Parsard’s SHE’S A WONDER by a short head in the last hop at the wire, winning in 1:14.1.
HOIST THE MAST, who had beaten SHE’S A WONDER by a short head when they met on debut at four furlongs straight, prevailed by the same margin to claim second after both ran themselves into the ground in fast splits of 22.2 and 45.1.
Thomas, who started the afternoon leading Dane Nelson by 10 winners, maintained his advantage by landing both DaCosta winners to close the nine-race card.
Nelson had ridden back-to-back winners, AWESOME GLITTER and LEGALITY, in the fourth and fifth races, respectively, earlier.
The first mandatory payout in the new Reggae 6 returned $3.19 million apiece to five winning tickets. The bet starts anew on Saturday with its first-day single-winning ticket prize of a guaranteed $3 million.
