The Jamaica Scorpions put in yet another poor showing with the bat, this time against the Windward Islands Volcanoes, to go down by 92 runs in their Regional Super50 encounter at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.

It was the third straight loss for the Andre Coley-coached Scorpions, who remain at the bottom of the Super50 table, without a point.

The Scorpions, who were chasing 261 for victory, faltered for 168 all out in 36.4 overs, despite a fighting knock from Andre McCarthy, who once again showed some resilience, with 55 runs from as many deliveries, including six fours and one six.

Fabian Allen, batting at number seven, chipped in with a valiant 39 from 43 deliveries, with two fours and three sixes. He and McCarthy put on 69 runs for the sixth wicket

Once again it was left-arm spinner Larry Edwards, who did the damage for the Volcanoes, bagging three for 36 from his 10 overs, as the Scorpions failed to put together any enough meaningful partnerships.

The St Lucian player came into the attack and tore through the Scorpions’ batting, removing opener Aldane Thomas for 15, captain Rovman Powell for two and debutant Javelle Glenn for five.

Fast bowler Ryan John chipped in with two scalps for 33 runs in eight overs, while part-time leg-spinner Andre Fletcher wrapped up the innings with the last two wickets for just three runs.

Earlier, Keron Cottoy played another brilliant late order knock to spruce up the Volcanoes innings after a circumspect start.

Cottoy hit 64 from 47 balls with four fours and four sixes, to take the Windwards from 161 for five to 257 for seven. He shared in a 62-run partnership with Roland Cato, who made 23.

Earlier, Andre Fletcher hit 60 and Kevin Stoute 45, to help the Volcanoes’ cause with the bat, as they posted 260 for eight in their 50 overs.

Scorpions captain Rovman Powell led the bowling charge with three wickets for 47 runs, with Fabian Allen bagging two for 35.

The Scorpions did not do themselves any favours in the field, as they put down as much as five catches, and Powell lamented the team’s poor fielding effort and lacklustre run chase.

“I think it was a poor fielding effort, whenever you do so much work in training and come and put out that fielding display, it’s always a disappointment,” said Powell.

“It’s still a struggle in the middle order with our batters to get some partnerships and up top, we need to find a solid pair to start and then myself and the other batters have to get some partnerships going in the middle order,” said Powell.
