The Jamaica Tallawahs shrugged off back-to-back defeats to conjure up a much-needed 22-run win against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in their Hero Caribbean Premier League encounter at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis, yesterday.

The Tallawahs put in a much-improved batting display to post 169 for eight in their 20 overs, after which they restricted the hosts to 147 for eight, thanks to a good all-around bowling display led by pacer Migael Pretorius, who bagged three wickets.

The Tallawahs started brightly after being inserted, with new opening pair Kennar Lewis and Kirk McKenzie getting them off to a positive start with a 37-run opening stand.

That start was excellent compared to the 15 for five and 21 for four the Tallawahs put together in their last two encounters against the Trinbago Knight Riders.

The platform opened the way for the middle order to push on, and that they did with Shamar Brooks and captain Rovman Powell pacing their innings fluently.

The duo added 54 runs for the third wicket with Powell going on to get 37 before he went caught at mid-off by Dominic Drakes off Fabian Allen.

Brooks continued to mix proper cricketing shots with some aggressive stroke play, as he added another valuable 48-run fifth-wicket partnership with Andre Russell, who muscled his way to 28 off 17 balls with two fours and three sixes.

Brooks went on to get 43 runs from 33 balls with four fours and two sixes to set up the formidable total for the Tallawahs, who petered towards the end to 169 for eight.

BIG WICKETS

There were two wickets each for Drakes, Fawad Ahmed and Jon-Russ Jaggesar for the Patriots, who stalled in their run chase with the big wickets of Evin Lewis and Chris Gayle, who made five and 12 runs, respectively.

Those big scalps knocked the stuffing out of the Patriots’ batting, as the Tallawahs’ disciplined bowling saw the run rate climbing above 15 runs per over as the innings went on.

Devon Thomas, with 34, and Joshua Da Silva, with 28, tried to stay in touching distance, but the fall of their wickets made the scenario all that difficult with the hosts precariously placed at 91 for four in the 15th over.

A late-order flurry of sixes from Dominic Drakes, who made 22, and Allen, 18, was not enough, as the Tallawahs got over the line, thanks to three wickets for Pretorious and two for Veerasammy Permaul.

With the win, the Tallawahs jump to fourth in the standings on six points with a better net run rate, and Powell was happy his team could find the winning formula once again.

“It has been a long time we haven’t gotten a win and it was important to get those two points,” Powell said. “Our batting has been struggling but it was most pleasing to see it come off today.”

The Tallawahs are in action again, against St Lucia Kings tonight at 7:00 Jamaica time.
