Cornwall survive scare to secure victory

DR DEAN Weatherly, coach of Cornwall College, says he is happy to start with three points after having to come-from-behind for their 2-1 victory over Irwin High School in their opening game in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) DaCosta Cup rural area football competition at the Irwin field in St James.

Dr Weatherly, who admitted they are usually slow starters, said he is pleased with the belief his boys showed.

“First-game jitters is always there and this is a very young team. The first half was not the best as expected, but we saw where the boys settled down in the second half. Irwin gave us a very good test. I am pleased with what I see in my team right now, so we are taking it one game at a time,” Dr Weatherly said.

Playing in the second game of the double-header, Cornwall went into the break 1-0 down, after Irwin took the lead just seven minutes in when Tavin Leslie curled a beauty into the top right corner, beating the full-stretched goalkeeper.

Brandon Timberlake found the equaliser for Cornwall from the penalty spot two minutes into the second half. The game was made easier for the Orange Street boys when Irwin’s goalscorer Leslie was shown a straight red card following a karate kick two minutes after the equaliser.

Davian McLean scored what proved to be Cornwall’s winner in the 70th minute.

“It’s three points at a time and it’s good to win the first game, especially in a round-robin situation. It is good to come away with three points, we will work on the goalscoring as we go along,” Dr Weatherly added.

HERBERT MORRISON WIN

In the early game, Herbert Morrison Technical High School blanked Maldon 5-0. Malique Reid opened the scoring in the 11th minute before Camarca Brown (20th, 45th) and Keishawn Heath (70th, 72nd) each netted a brace

Coach of Herbert Morrison, Garfield Anderson, said he is pleased with the performance of his boys, which shows that they are in it to compete this year in the ‘crème de la crème’ Zone A.

“We are pleased with the performance and grateful for the good start. We know we are in a tough zone, so we are happy to get this one behind us,” Anderson said.

“Over the years, we have been in a participatory mode. I intend to change that and make us competitive. That’s why we are happy to be back in Zone A that has produced so many title winners. We will strive as much as we can to get out of the group, which will be an achievement, “ he added.
