Dejae’s Boy in the nick of time
DEJAE’S BOY forced his way through a crack along the rail to outfinish THE GOOD WITCH and SUPER DUPER in a three-way photo at six furlongs for Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited’s Administration Department Trophy at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Partnered by claiming jockey Nicholas Hibbert for trainer O’Neil Markland, the five-year-old, dark bay gelding straightened third, going after 13-1 outsider SUPER DUPER and THE GOOD WITCH.
SUPER DUPER and THE GOOD WITCH battled in a stretch duel before determined DEJAE’S BOY stuck his head in front shades from the wire, winning at odds of 6-1, clocking 1:13.1 on a track running sloppy after consistent rainfall from the fourth race onward.
The howling 3-5 favourite, leading trainer Jason DaCosta’s EAGLE ONE, struggled to factor in the underfoot conditions, straightening among the backmarkers, while stablemate SUPER DUPER enjoyed the slop, leading in fast splits before being caught close home.
Champion trainer Anthony Nunes, who appears to be making a run at DaCosta’s stakes lead, saddled his second three-timer in as many race meets after closing last Sunday’s card with a hat-trick of upsetters.
Nunes first struck in the second event, closing out the exacta in the two-year-old event with ROYAL ASH upstaging hot 1-9 stablemate, VOLATILITY, landing at odds of 3-1, the second of four winners for Reyan Lewis.
Lewis, who had opened the 10-race card with 3-5 favourite RUSTY, won three of the first four events, following up with even-money choice PARTY PRINCESS in the fourth, returned to guide home Nunes’ 1-5 chalk, MORIMOTO, in the seventh.
Racing continues on Tuesday after tomorrow’s nine-race card was rescheduled in observance of tomorrow’s official day of mourning to mark the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
