Sydney McLaughlin-Leverone beats Fraser-Pryce, Amusan to World Athlete of the Year

World and Olympic 400-metre hurdles champion and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Leverone has been named World Athletic Female Athlete of the Year.

The announcement was made at the World Athletics Awards today, the 23-year-old taking the title ahead of five-time world 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and world 100m hurdles champion and world record holder, Tobi Amusan.

McLauglin-Leverone broke the world record twice this year, the last being at the World Championships in Oregon in July, clocking a staggering 50.68 seconds to lift the title.

World champion pole vaulter and world record holder Mondo Duplantis was named Male Athlete of the Year having won the world title and set a new world record in the process with a height of 6.21 metres.

American Erriyon Knighton and Serbia's Adriana Villagos were Rising Stars winners for 2022, titles given to the best male and female under-20 athletes respectively.
