Jamaica, playing on the opening day of the Pan American Hockey5s Cup at the Mona Hockey Field yesterday, got off to a rough start in both the men’s and women’s categories.

The tournament, which also doubles as a Hockey5s World Cup qualifier, saw Jamaica’s women first up against Trinidad and Tobago (T&T).

The women would go on to lose 2-1 before the men, who took on the United States last night, suffered a 4-2 defeat.

The Jamaican women made a good fist of their opening encounter, going into the first half tied 1-1 after Imauny Linton’s seventh-minute goal cancelled out one from T&T’s Felicia King in the fourth.

The Jamaicans, though, would be bested by Amie Olton’s 12th-minute strike.

The evening’s last encounter proved a little more exciting on the goalscoring front, with the United States running out to a two-goal lead in the first half against the hosts.

The United States would open the scoring inside the first minute through Michael Marminski Jr before the lead was doubled in the fifth through Armarpreet Sidhu.

Jamaica would get on the scoresheet in the second half thanks to Vernon Tyrone, who ended with a brace, scoring in the 10th and 12th minutes.

But the United States were kept ahead by Ajai Dhadwai, who had a brace of his own, scoring in the 13th and 16th minutes.

Jamaica’s women will take on Brazil tomorrow in a 5 p.m. encounter, and the men close out action at 7 p.m. against Panama.

Jamaica’s women are in Pool B along with Trinidad and Tobago, Brazil, and Uruguay, and the men are in Pool A with Panama, Puerto Rico, and the United States.
