Jamaica's Danniel Thomas-Dodd gets ready to throw the shot put during World Athletics Championships qualification at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary this morning.

Jamaica’s Danniel Thomas-Dodd was forced to pull out a last-ditch throw to automatically qualify for the final of the women’s shot put at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary this morning.

Thomas-Dodd, throwing in group A of qualification, landed a put of 19.36 metres, comfortably further than the 19.10 automatic qualification standard, but the reality was anything but.

After throws of 17.75 and 18.77, the latter of which would eventually have been enough to make the final, Thomas-Dodd, who wasn’t sure, was forced to dig into the well of her eight national titles and World Championships silver-medal experience to pull out a big throw when it counted.

Thomas-Dodd’s mark landed her fourth in group A and sixth, overall, with the Netherlands’ Jessica Schilder leading all qualifiers with 19.64 metres.

Thomas-Dodd will again be in action in the shot put final later this afternoon at 1:15 p.m.
