Glenmuir stay perfect after seeing off plucky Denbigh High

GLENMUIR HIGH School ensured that there was even more distance between them and Denbigh High following their 2-0 win in their top-of-the-table Zone L ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup encounter at Denbigh High yesterday.

The win now sees the Andrew Peart-coached Glenmuir securing their fourth of the campaign and maximum 12 points, five more than second-placed Denbigh.

The encounter was expected to be a humdinger with both sides showing early goalscoring form. However, before the game had got under way, there was no sign of Denbigh High and the league’s leading goalscorer Dunsting Cohen.

Cohen was said to have picked up a knock in their last game against Old Harbour High and had to sit out the fixture.

The loss of Cohen was a big blow to Denbigh, who tried to apply defensive tactics to try and keep out the free-scoring Glenmuir side, which had 25 goals before the fixture.

It took 18 minutes for Glenmuir to break the deadlock as Derrick Henry’s delightful through ball beat the Denbigh off-side trap and found the onrushing Deandre Johnson, who finished neatly to give the visitors the lead.

With both team’s tight defensive lines, the score held all the way up to time added before Glenmuir would get a second when Johnson headed home a floated right-sided cross from Devonie Gordon.

The win was pleasing for Peart, who thought the encounter was a good test for his team.

“I thought this was a good game for the team. We managed to control the game and not allow Denbigh any real chances. We didn’t create as many chances but we had the ball in their half a lot which is always something you want to see.”

Assistant coach Daniel Powell of Denbigh believed the teams were even despite the result.

“I thought the guys played their best despite Dunsting not being able to play. This loss won’t derail us and I believe the confidence is still in the team and we will prevail.”

Meanwhile, defending champions Clarendon College stayed perfect through four games, with a 2-0 win over Edwin Allen in their top-of-the-table Zone H clash.

The win sees Clarendon College on a maximum of 12 points with Edwin Allen suffering their first loss on nine points in second place.

In another top-of-the-table encounter in Zone I, Tacky leapt out front on 13 points following their 6-2 win over second-place Annotto Bay.

In other results, Mile Gully are joint leaders with Bellefield in Zone G following their 3-0 win over Homwood, Christiana defeated Alphonso Davis High 1-0, and Mannings turned back Knockalva 3-0 to lead Zone D on 10 points.

Black River tagged Petersfield 1-0, while Newell and BB Coke played to a 0-0 draw.
