St Hugh’s juniors open schoolgirl netball title defence
DESPITE LOSING several members from last year’s successful team, there were no troubles for the Nardia Hanson-coached St Hugh’s High School junior team in their opening game of the Urban ISSA schoolgirl netball competition.
Playing at home in Zone D action on Friday, the defending junior champions were too good for Greater Portmore High, convincingly running out 32-5 winners. The Cross Roads-based school were also impressive among the seniors, beating Greater Portmore, 37-15.
Campion, Convent of Mercy Academy (Alpha), and Immaculate Conception also had double wins on Friday.
Competing in Zone D, Campion’s juniors demolished Tarrant 30-2 before their seniors ran out 37-15 winners. Also in Zone D, Alpha’s juniors were too good for Holy Trinity with a big 28-1 win. The seniors were also dominant, Alpha easing to a 23-3 win.
Last year’s beaten junior finalists, Immaculate, got off to a good start in Zone C, stopping Meadowbrook 12-5 in junior competition, while the seniors won 16-9.
There were also matches in Zone E on Friday, as Gaynstead got by Kingston Technical 29-2 in junior action, while Queen’s blew by Waterford 39-2 in senior action.
There were also matches in the rural competition with mixed results for hosts Manchester High against May Day High in Zone E action. Manchester, beaten senior finalists last year, suffered a 26-24 loss but enjoyed a 39-5 win in junior competition.
Maggotty, at home in Zone C, beat St Elizabeth Technical High School 30-15 in senior action after their junior team had beaten them 9-2.
In Zone H action, Aabuthnott Gallimore’s juniors blanked Tacky 8-0, but the seniors lost 19-4.
In the day’s only other game, Mount Alvernia’s juniors beat Rhodes Hall 21-7 in junior action from Zone B.
