Henry’s brace lifts Hydel to 2-0 victory over Charlie Smith

DESPITE BEING reduced to 10 players by the 32nd minute of their ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup, second-round-bound Hydel registered a comfortable 2-0 victory over Charlie Smith yesterday at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Hydel’s goals came courtesy of a D’Sean Henry brace, the tallies coming in the 45th and 62nd minutes.

Charlie Smith, cheered on by their home supporters, started brightly and got their first goal-scoring opportunity in the 19th minute through D’anthony Stephenson’s shot, which was carefully handled by Hydel goal keeper Idrian Robinson.

As Hydel’s confidence grew, their numbers fell as Gabriel Sebourne’s reckless tackle sent him to an early shower courtesy of a second yellow card.

The reduction in numbers served as a wake-up call, the visitors getting an opportunity in the 42nd minute, which fell at the feet of Omario Henry, who failed to capitalise, running out of ideas despite being one on one with goalkeeper Deonte Gary.

Opportunities turned to goal on the stroke of the first half as D’Sean Henry, with a combination of composure and trickery, slammed home a fantastic left-footed effort in the back of the Charlie Smith net.

At the start of the second half, Omario Henry was again in the thick of things but saw his effort come within inches of the target.

As the Devon Anderson-coached team tightened their grip on the game, victory was confirmed in the 62nd-minute, with D’Sean Henry latching on to a through ball and tapping home.

Hydel’s captain and midfielder, Ronaldo Barrett, was pleased with his team’s second-half performance on the day.

“The main focus was to come out here and get the three points, which we did, so we’re grateful for that. In the first half, I wasn’t pleased as we were rushing to score, but in the second half, we came out, relaxed, and started to play our game,” said Barrett.

Oshane Tomlinson, assistant coach of Hydel, in his post-game assessment, said the team should have shown more composure in front of goal.

“We came out with a game plan even though we had to adjust it, but the tempo was there. We need more composure in front of the goal, but when we get back to the training ground, we will work on that,” said Tomlinson.
