WELL-TRAVELLED COACH Davion Ferguson believes his vision and that of Jamaica’s most successful club, Portmore United, are in alignment.

Ferguson, who will be calling the shots from the sidelines in the upcoming Jamaica Premier League (JPL) season, believes that he has made the right choice from the plethora of offers he had on the table.

“It wasn’t a difficult decision despite having offers from other clubs both locally and regionally. When I analysed everything and look at where I’m at in my life, both as a person and as a coach and the vision of the club, I think it as a very good fit and an easy decision in the end,” said Ferguson.

Ferguson will take over a team that finished fourth in the regular season and lost at the quarterfinal stage of the JPL last season.

“To be honest, Portmore United is a club that I’ve followed for a long time. I’m originally from the western parts of the country and Reno FC was my club. Portmore United, as a club, fits exactly in how I want to see the game being played; we have similar ideologies. The vision that the management staff has for the club and how they want me to lead that vision was also important,” said Ferguson.

Portmore United’s last title came in the 2018-19 season and the former Manning Cup and JPL-winning coach suggested that bringing silverware back to the club is among his main priorities.

“As a coach I like to win wherever I’m at and whatever competition that I’m in. I play and coach to win and we have a solid group. This is the winningest club in the local premier league, so automatically this has to be something that we have on our agenda. The objective is always to put our best foot forward and once we do that, then it augurs well for us in terms of silverware,” he explained.

Ferguson, who spent two seasons alongside Theodore Whitmore at St Ann-based outfit, Mount Pleasant, lauded him for the guidance he showed throughout the two years.

In those two years, ending this last JPL season, Mount Pleasant were JPL winners and runners-up to Cavalier.

“It was excellent, top notch. I think I’ve grown a lot as a coach working with him as he guided me in ways where I needed guidance and we complemented each other very well. He also gave me a lot of responsibilities and confidence to believe in my work. On a whole, it was one of the best experiences that I had working in football with any coach,” said Ferguson.
