Jamaica can set new mark in 4x100m at World Under-20

WHEN RELAY action gets underway next week at the World Under-20 Championships in Peru, Jamaica’s female team will be seeking to make it three wins in a row following success in Nairobi and Colombia.

On both occasions, the Jamaican girls produced world record breaking runs by the same quartet. In Nairobi, the quartet of Kerrica Hill, Serena Cole and Tia and Tina Clayton stopped the clock at 42.94 seconds.

The same group went faster in Cali as they erased the previous record with a brilliant 42.59 clocking.

With a world leading time of 43.63 at this year’s Carifta Games in Grenada, Jamaica will start as favourites to win another world under-20 relay title. The quartet in Grenada were Habiba Harris, Briana Campbell, Shanoya Douglas and Thieanna-Lee Terrelonge.

All four will be in Peru but changes are likely to be made as Hill will be back while her former teammate at Hydel, Alana Reid ,who was a member of the women’s sprint quartet in the Paris Olympics, will also be there.

Any four selected should be good enough to secure victory for Jamaica. The only question here is, will they lower the world under-20 mark for a third time? They will be highly motivated to do so and a quartet of Reid, Douglas, Terrelonge and Hill can threaten that record.
